Austin Resource Recovery Curbside Composting

Posted by Jenny Carroll

How much trash does your household produce on a regular basis? My own home used to fill the trash bin as well as have an overflowing recycling bin every single week. However, back in June of 2018, Austin Resource Recovery began the Curbside Composting program in select areas and we were shocked to find how much of our regular output could be redirected to the new green compost bin rather than the trashcan bound for the landfill.

Due to the success of the program, Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) plans to expand Curbside Composting to all their customers by 2020, pending future approval by City Council. According to their website, the program is part of ARR’s City of Austin Zero Waste goal to divert 90 percent of materials from landfills by 2040.

Why Compost?

My own experience supports ARR’s claim that close to half of all trash sent to landfills is potentially compostable material. &ldqu ...

Happiest of Holidays from the Stanberry REALTOR Family!

Every family has their own version of holiday cheer, from watching movies, decorating the house, singing songs, or bah hum-bugging the whole thing. Here are some favorite memories and traditions of the holidays from our own dear Stanberry family. May this give you some ideas for your own family or simply bring you a smile this holiday season.
Randy McDonald- Our family started a family tradition many years ago on Thanksgiving to hold hands in a circle and each individually tell the circle of family one thing they are grateful for. It's a wonderful experience, watching children especially, grow in their year to year thoughts of grace in their lives. Often a tear of happiness is seen rolling down the cheek of those that are listening, along with many big smiles. This year we had a new 10-year-old girl at the family dinner, she has a rough life at her home and spends most of her time after school and nights staying at my son's family home. With grateful tears ...

Stanberry Vendor Spotlight: Junkluggers

We don’t typically think much about trash removal or hauling junk until something happens and we need to have it handled as quickly as possible. Usually involving a dramatic life change, it could be a divorce, a death in the family, massive spring/fall cleaning or any number of reasons leading to the impersonal collection and the inevitable disposing of our belongings at the dump somewhere outside of town. Not exactly inspiring, right?

Well, Laura Chavez with Junkluggers Junk Removal Service will change the way we think about trash. Junkluggers is relatively new to Austin but we can promise you that you’ll be hearing a lot more about them soon! Originally started in 2004 in Connecticut, the company rapidly outgrew its small hometown and in 2013 expanded to franchise opportunities nationwide.

After rejecting 3 other franchise possibilities, Laura was presented with the Junkluggers business plan by a franchise broker. Coming from a background in health and nutrit ...

Are You Ready For An Electric Vehicle?

Austinites are proud of the contributions we've made as a city to live more sustainably. We recycle, compost, grow our own food, raise chickens and goats, and we're starting to see more electric cars and hybrids on our roads than any other city in Texas. In fact, to help reach that goal Austin made a commitment back in 2007 to be completely carbon neutral by 2020, partly by having 330 vehicles in our city's fleet be plug-in electric automobiles. While that date is certain to be slipped at our current rate of growth and available programs, we are doing our best collectively to help move Austin in the right direction.

How many electric cars will we have?
According to Jessi Devenyns of the Austin Monitor, "ERCOT is predicting that by 2031, 20 percent of the vehicles on Texas roads will be electric. In Austin, this would translate to 320,000 vehicles producing $128 million a year in e-fuel revenue. It would also mean that these vehicles would make up 10 percent of the ene ...

How Do Rising Interest Rates Really Affect My Monthly Payment?

With interest rates on the rise, buyers have been asking, "How do higher interest rates really affect my monthly payment?" The answer might surprise you and it's not as much as you would think.
In this example, we're using a buyer with a 760 credit score putting 10% down on a $300,000 sales price using a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. The monthly principal and interest payment change is only $18.90 a month per .125% rise in interest rate.

Today's rates are still near half their historical average of over 8%. That provides continued opportunity to lock in very low rates, even if they are higher than in recent history. The days of 4% interest rates are behind us, for now, so maximizing your down payment is a vital component to keeping your payment as low as possible. This is why having an experienced mortgage lender on your team is key to your home buying success. They can help you organize your finances, such as payin ...
